Interning Abroad...

53 Degrees North HQ
Dublin, Ireland

For my internship abroad, I was placed with 53 Degrees North. The company is an Irish micro-company that specializes in outdoor and adventure gear. They are a family owned company that has three storefronts in Ireland—one in Cork and two in the Dublin area. I was very excited to be working for this company at their headquarter location at the 53DN warehouse and office.

I worked under two supervisors—Caoimhe and Ben. Ben is the director of marketing for 53 and Caoimhe runs the social accounts for 53. I worked more directly with Caoimhe on social media, but Ben gave me direction and guidance in the office as well. They both gave me daily "business as usual" tasks to work on, but the major project that I was able to work on was the first annual 53 Degrees North Adventure Festival. Every post I made was geared towards not only selling 53 products, but they also were for pushing ticket sales. I was very excited to be working on a big project like this one!

My months interning abroad changed my life. It reassured my future career path and I really felt like I was doing a job that I was meant for. I felt like I could have fit into the work place perfectly after my internship. I knew what I was doing and it felt right. Finishing up my internship was one of the saddest days. Making my last post and signing out of the Instagram for the last time, was just weird. I had grown with that company and all of the wonderful workers in those short 6 weeks. I did not have a final project so I didn’t really feel finished. I still constantly think of new post ideas and will message them to my supervisor because I just can’t let it go.

My supervisors and I were on the same page my entire internship. Even when I felt like I messed up, it wasn’t noticed as an error to my co-workers.  This internship gave me confidence that I have never really had. Working at a professional level really kind of woke me up and made me test myself. It was cool hearing people praise my work, and I truly felt liked I belonged because of it. I have nothing but great things to say about my internship experience. I wish every student could take the opportunity to go abroad. Working in another country was truly once in a lifetime and I am so grateful for everything. I could not have imagined a more perfect fit for me. The country, the company, my supervisor, EVERYTHING—it was perfect.

I don’t even know how to sum up my internship or my time abroad. In the days following my return to the states everyone kept asking me, “So how was Ireland?” and to be honest I still don’t even have the words to sum up my two months there. It was everything to me. It was truly the best thing I could have ever done. I am so happy that I took a chance and applied to intern abroad.
